The numbers would tell the truth

When it was revealed, many years ago, that the police was collecting race-based statistics, members of the Black community, me included, argued against the practice. To the best of our knowledge, there were no guidelines that governed the use of those statistics which meant that they could be used to further vilify the community. The practice was supposedly stopped but other methods have replaced that practice, up to and including carding.

Housing problems

Toronto Mayor John Tory may have the best intentions with his tough talk that those who live in the city’s subsidized housing will lose residency if they are found to be dealing drugs. Reacting to an interim report from a task force on Toronto Community Housing (TCH), Tory added a six-month ultimatum directed at TCH top brass to rid public housing property of drug dealers.

Why are y’all so excited over John Tory’s neo-carding scheme?

Carding is similar to New York’s “stop and frisk” practice. It is a repressive tool used by the cops to stop, question, document and store personal information of people in non-criminal encounters. This surveillance instrument is disproportionately used against Afrikans and other racialized people. It is mainly deployed against members of the working class.

The struggle against carding has been joined

Who knew? All we needed to do to get Toronto Police Service Board chair, Alok Mukherjee, to come into the light on carding in the current climate down at City Hall and at police headquarters was to sit him in public transit next to a gentle, respectable Black man who has himself been carded.

On his show on HBO two Fridays ago, one of Bill Maher’s guests, rapper Killer Mike, raised a question about good cops that is worth repeating.
Killer Mike’s question was, though, if most of the cops are good cops, how come they don’t rat out the bad ones?
