National player Nikhil Dutta, who had a six-week summer stint with Stanmore Cricket Club which plays in the Middlesex league, is among six Canadians included in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Americas Under-19 side that will participate in the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) 50-overs tournament next month in Guyana.
Canadian, American and Bermudian players will represent the region in the competition that runs from August 4-15. This will be the third time an ICC Americas team will take part in the WICB youth tournament.
A member of the ICC Americas Under-19 team in 2012, Dutta was omitted in 2013, despite winning the Best Batsman, Best Bowler and the tournament’s Most Valuable Player awards at last year’s youth championship in order to be available for selection for the Canadian senior team’s World Cricket League (WCL) and Intercontinental Cup contests last August.
The 19-year-old Kuwait-born all-rounder made his One-Day International (ODI) debut in March 2013 against Kenya in the United Arab Emirates.
The other Canadians on the squad are Aniket Joshi, Arjun Parikh, Abraash Khan, Farhan Malik and Armaan Kapoor.
ICC Americas High Performance consultant Tom Evans will lead the coaching squad.
An Australian native, Evans joined the ICC Americas Office last year after spending three years as the ICC East Asia-Pacific Regional Development Officer.
One coach each from the three countries will also be part of the coaching staff. They are former Canadian all-rounder Errol Barrow, Bermuda’s Allan Douglas and Linden Fraser of the United States.
“This is very much a coach development initiative as it is a player one,” said Evans.
The squad arrives in Guyana on August 1 and will attend WICB development seminars the following day and a training session on August 3 before the team’s first match against Trinidad & Tobago at Demerara Cricket Club on August 4.
The ICC Americas will play a total of six group games. Last year’s ICC Americas squad had a respectable showing in the WICB youth tournament, defeating the Leeward Islands by three wickets and scoring 209 in a chase against Windward Islands that ended in a tie.
The full squad is Nikhil Dutta, Aniket Joshi, Armaan Kapoor, Abraash Khan, Farham Malik, Arjun Parikh (Canada); Onias Bascome, Tre Manders, Delray Rawlins, Micah Simons (Bermuda); Vibhav Altekar, Arsh Buch, Keifer Phill, Trevis Ross (USA).
