For nearly two decades, husband and wife Gifford and Raphaelita Walker have been spreading joy at Christmas time to thousands of young children.
Dressed as Mr. & Mrs. Santa Claus, they distribute gifts to kids at the annual Jamaican Canadian Association’s (JCA) Christmas party.
“When we looked around, there were no Black Santas, so we decided we should do it,” said Raphaelita Walker. “At first, members of our social committee would wrap the gifts and we would go to various community centers to make the distributions in rented Santa Claus outfits.
“It started out with Gifford playing the role and there was this one time he picked up the suit and it was dirty. So we decided to buy a suit for the following year. Not too long after, I made one and we became the Santa duet…We enjoy doing this every year to brighten to lives of young people.”
They presented gifts to nearly 150 children at this year’s event at the JCA.
