BASSETERRE: St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister, Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, has congratulated Venezuelan President, Hugo Chavez, who was re-elected last Sunday for a third consecutive six-year term.
Dr. Douglas said Chavez’s re-election “bears stark evidence of the Bolivarian people’s (trust) in your leadership capabilities as well as in your ideologies destined to propel your country and your people on the path to greater social investments and economic prosperity”.
“The Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis and the Bolivarian Republic have long enjoyed very close ties and I am confident that this tenure commencing in early 2013, will buttress even further the strong bonds of friendship and fraternity between our countries,” said Douglas in a congratulatory message.
Douglas said that the PETROCARIBE initiative (an oil alliance with several Caribbean states to purchase oil from Venezuela with preferential rates), “your brainchild and the hallmark of your benevolent outreach to the region, continues to prove valuable to the economic development of our country and, for which, we are very deeply appreciative”.
“You have been granted another six years to forge ahead with the social welfare programs aimed at safeguarding the interests of the most vulnerable in the society and from which tangible results are anticipated,” said Douglas.
