Forty-eight players participated in the MACPRI Toronto International Oware tournament this past weekend at the Africentric Alternative School.

The event drew an attendance of over 200 parents and children who participated in all-day activities including storytelling, arts and crafts, jewellery making, African martial arts and more.

Players in the Oware tournament ranged from eight to 72, making this a truly inter-generational family event as the organizers intended it to be. The tournament’s cut off age was initially 12 but, based on skill level, confidence and desire to play, younger children were included.

After a long day of competition, Samuel Stevens walked away as the champion, receiving the $250 prize. Peter Anaide took home the second place prize of $100. Andrew Martin seized third and walked away with $50. Fourth place contestant Jelani Small received an Oware Stool 7 game board.

All participants were given a gift courtesy of MACPRI and the primary sponsor for the event, Evans Electrical Services.

Other sponsors included Sankofa In Cipher, CHRY 105.5 FM, The 4Cs of Design and Niahson Technologies.

The tournament and family fun day was held in partnership with the Africentric Alternative School, Oware Canada, Harriet Tubman Community Organization, African Canadian Heritage Association, Redemption Re-Integration Services, All African Inventors Museum, Knowledge Bookstore, For the People Canada and Models Entertainment.

With increased sponsorship the organizers hope to continue to develop the tournament as an inter-generational activity and may add a mini tournament on the same day for younger children.
