PORT OF SPAIN: Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar has announced that local government elections will be held on October 21.

The Prime Minister says she is on record calling on the then PNM government to hold local government elections adding that holding the elections on time was more important than the result.

“Win, lose or draw, we must keep the promises we made to the people and the rest will fall into place,” she said.

Persad Bissessar said that the government proposes the proportional representation system for local government and the new system will make citizens aware of who their prospective alderman will be before the elections.

“The time has come for aldermen to be selected by the population and not a selected few. Every vote will count under the proportional representative system and no vote will go to waste.

“Proposed changes in the law (will ensure that) local government elections will be held when they are due.

“My government will propose new rules for the election of aldermen. I look forward to the support of all parties in the Lower House.”
