Family means a lot to Lillian Marshall.
Last Saturday, dozens of her loved ones and friends joined in her 90th birthday celebration at a Scarborough church that she has been an integral part of since migrating from Barbados in 1981.
Her birthday was on August 19.
Marshall, who has 11 children – one is deceased – along with 22 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, resides with her daughter, Lorraine Marshall.
“For my mom, family is very important to her and I know she feels blessed to have so many of them around to celebrate this milestone with her,” said Marshall.
The daughter of a pastor, the nonagenarian sold fruit and vegetables before coming to Canada to join her eldest son and other family members.
“My mother was the eldest child and she was raised in an environment of morals, values and ethics,” said Lorraine Marshall. “She’s also a very determined person.”
Despite her advanced age, Marshall’s faculties are still intact.
“When I am at work, she will take messages for me and pass them on when I get back home,” said her daughter. “She would insist I return the calls because she did not want the callers to believe that she had forgotten to pass on the messages. That’s the way she is.”
