An eight-game unbeaten streak and a spot in Round Three of the 2014 World Cup soccer qualifying competition paved the way for Canada to move up 11 spots to 72nd in the world in the latest International Soccer Federation (FIFA) ranking.

Canada drew nil-all with St. Kitts & Nevis on the road, and shut out the twin-island federation 4-0 in the return match four days later at BMO Field to finish on top of its group in the last round of regional qualifiers.

The national side is ranked eighth in the Confederation of North, Central American & Caribbean Associations of Soccer (CONCACAF) behind Mexico (which is ranked 20th in the world), the United States, Jamaica, Panama, Honduras, Costa Rica and El Salvador.

Gumbs wants to coach soccer in his native St. Kitts & Nevis

By ed 02.12.2011

By RON FANFAIR

Despite being an elder statesman of soccer, Keith “Kayamba” Gumbs says he still feels young.

Judging by the boundless energy and enthusiasm he displayed in St. Kitts & Nevis’ 4-0 loss to Canada in a World Cup soccer qualifier at BMO Field recently, very few could dispute Gumbs’ youthful claim.

Though the twin-island federation was playing for pride having already being eliminated from the next qualifying round, the 39-year-old experienced striker led from the front, encouraging his younger teammates to play hard for themselves and their country.

When Dwayne DeRosario joined his third Major League Soccer team in two months late last June, he posted on his twitter account, “when one door closes, many more open.”

Canada has qualified for the next round of World Cup soccer qualifying competition.

The national team left St. Kitts last weekend with the one point it needed to advance after a dull goalless draw with 103rd ranked St. Kitts/Nevis in its 100th World Cup qualifying match.

The 83rd ranked Canada has won 39, lost 30 and drawn 31 contests since making its World Cup qualifying entry in 1957.

Canadian coach Stephen Hart defended his team’s defensive play, saying the side did exactly what it needed to do to advance.
