In support of the Land We Love Gala which commemorates the 50th anniversary of Jamaica’s independence from Britain, the Carpenters and Allied Workers Local 27 are in the process of constructing and installing the main stage which is being built in the shape of the island of Jamaica.

This stage, which is valued at as much as $80,000, is being donated to the Gala and is being built by Local 27 apprentices from its community partnerships OYAP (TDSB and other school boards) and CHOICE (with TCHC) under the guidance of Union instructors.

The stage will be 100′ by 30′ and 6′ high with various ancillary/smaller stages attached including stairs and ramps.

This project has brought together union community leadership, youth training and skills development and positive opportunities for youth.

The Jamaica Land We Love GALA is being held this Saturday, August 11, 5:30 p.m. at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (South Building). For more information go to the Gala’s website, www.jamaica50.ca
