Three students have been selected as winners of the 10th annual Caribana/Yorkgate Mall Scholarships.
The scholarships are awarded to students from Toronto’s Wards 7, 8 and 9 to pursue post-secondary education at Seneca College. The criteria for awarding scholarships include leadership skills, career aspirations and community involvement. The scholarships are fully funded by Yorkgate Mall Administration with production assistance provided by Seneca College, Toronto Police Services 31 Division, and Caribana Arts Group (CAG).
Juan José Rendón Matute, Monique Francis and Seyitgan Kandil were announced as the recipients of the scholarships during a press conference held last week in support of Caribana Arts Group’s Caribana Flags & Colours Children Festival, which will be held next month.
Rendón Matute, 19, attends James Cardinal McGuigan CSS and has been accepted into the Civil Engineering Technology program at Seneca for September 2013. He has been awarded a scholarship of $1,000 toward his tuition fees at Seneca.
Since immigrating to Toronto from Ecuador in 2012, Rendón Matute has won several scholastic honours. In Ecuador, he received awards from the National Honour Society and the Philanthropic Honour Society.

Jeffreys Collegiate Institute, has been accepted into the Hospitality Management program at Seneca College for this fall and has been awarded a scholarship of $500 towards her tuition fees. Of Jamaican descent, Francis intends to major in International Hotel and Restaurant Management and aspires to establish a philanthropic enterprise in Jamaica.

Of Kurdish heritage, Kandil has won several awards for academic achievement, including a Science Award for outstanding achievement in Physics.
“The caliber of submissions for our scholarships continues to be high,” said Alicia Sealey, Chair of the 2013 Caribana/Yorkgate Mall Scholarship Committee. “It is extremely rewarding to affirm that Caribana continues to deliver on its long-standing educational mandate, while contributing to the beginning of a young person’s road to personal success.
“I extend much thanks to my fellow 2013 scholarship committee members, Lori Hennebury (Yorkgate Mall), Constable Phillip Sinclair (Toronto Police Services 31 Division), Bebena Demian (Seneca College), William Dolly (CAG) and Wilma Cromwell (CAG). Their volunteer service is truly appreciated.”
The CAG Caribana Flags & Colours Children Festival will be held on Saturday, July 13 at Yorkgate Mall, 1 Yorkgate Blvd. from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
