Retail Job Fair

A free retail ready job fair will be held on Thursday, April 1 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the YMCA North York Job Connect office, 4580 Dufferin Street, second floor, (at northwest corner of Finch Avenue West). The event is being held for youth ages 16 to 24. Participants should dress to impress and bring copies of resumes.

Easter Service

The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church Medhane Alem is inviting members of the community to attend the Ancient Celebration of Fasika (Easter) service at 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 3 at 23 Denison Road, Toronto. Refreshments will be provided after the service.

K.C. Alumni Spring Dance

The Kingston College (K.C.) Alumni will conduct a dance themed “It’s Spring Again…Spring Dance 2010″ on Saturday, April 10 from 9 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Church Hall, 14 Highgate Drive (two lights north of Steeles Ave., off Birchmount). Meeting on Pensions

Judy Sgro, MP York West, will conduct a meeting addressing pension issues on Sunday, April 11 at St. Jude Catholic School, 3251 Weston Road, North York, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Among the topics that will be discussed are how seniors can save more, what government can do to protect pensions and preventing poverty among seniors.

Event for Special Needs Children

The Entertainers Association Inc. Falcon Unlimited Services & Immigration Hut will conduct “Shining Stars Beautiful 2010″ at Woodbine Banquet Hall, 30 Vice Regent Boulevard, on Friday, April 16 from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. The event is being held to raise awareness for children with special needs and will feature entertainment by children and adults. Finger snacks will be served.

Forum at OISE

A forum titled “Opening the Door to Multiple Spirits: Releasing Ourselves from Mental Bondage”, will be held at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), University of Toronto, 252 Bloor Street West (Room 5-280) on Saturday, April 17 from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Dr. Molefi Kete Asante, Temple University Department of African-American Studies, will be the keynote speaker. Admission is $10.

CBW-Scarborough Meeting Dates

The Congress of Black Women of Canada, Scarborough Chapter, will hold monthly meetings every Thursday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Holy Spirit Catholic School, 3530 Sheppard Avenue East, Scarborough, on the following dates: April 22, May 27, and June 24.

Church of the Nativity Festival

The Church of the Nativity will conduct a flower festival, showcasing gardening and floral arrangement presentations, on Friday, April 23 from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, April 24 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The event will also feature a silent auction and a tea party, which will be held on April 24 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The event will take place at 10 Sewells Road (off Neilson Road, north of Sheppard Ave. East, Scarborough). Tickets are $7 for one day, $10 for two days and $5 for the tea party.

Free Cricket Coaching Sessions

The North Star Cricket Academy will hold a free cricket coaching session every Saturday and Sunday until Sunday, April 25 at Markham Road/Finch Avenue. Kids ages 8 to 15 are welcome. Saturday sessions will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday sessions will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

JCA Walkathon

The Jamaican Canadian Association (JCA) will host its annual Walkathon, themed “Walking for a Brighter Future”, on Sunday, May 2 at 10 a.m. Registration and breakfast will begin at 8 a.m. and an interfaith service will be held at 9:30 a.m.

The JCA is holding the event in collaboration with the Black Business and Professional Association, the Alliance of Jamaican Alumni, Tropicana Community Services, the Spelling Bee of Canada, PACE Canada, and the Ontario Black History Society. Proceeds from the event will support the JCA’s scholarship fund, its Saturday morning tutorial program and the building fund. Proceeds will also support initiatives of the other community organizations involved.

Participants are asked to pledge a minimum of $100.

Dr. Dei Book Releases

University of Toronto professor Dr. George Dei has released four new books: Teaching Africa, which offers critical perspectives to the study, learning and teaching of Africa and the African experience; and Learning to Succeed, a collection of pieces about high academic achievers in the Canadian school system. The other books, Fanon and Education: Thinking Through Pedagogical Possibilities and Fanon and the Counter-Insurgency of Education, examine the implications of the ideas of the late author and philosopher, Fritz Fanon, for rethinking education in North America.

Prenatal Program

Toronto Public Health is offering free prenatal classes for women three to six months pregnant, in a series of four evening sessions (from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.) at community locations throughout the city. Partners are welcome.

Empowering Women

Black Youth Helpline has developed a focus on single women to help strengthen women’s lead roles in their personal, family and community life.

The “Empowering Women” Project provides support, counselling, coaching, guidance training and regular networking opportunities. Parents benefit from 1:1 or group support; networking sessions; telephone counselling or volunteer opportunities to share their own experiences to benefit other parents.

Volunteers Needed

The Sickle Cell Association of Ontario is a volunteer-based, non-profit organization whose mission is to provide education and support to those affected by sickle cell and other red blood disorders. The SCAO is currently looking for volunteers with a range of skills and experience working with the community and managing funds for its Board of Directors.

Young Mothers Group

The Brampton West-Mississauga Ontario Early Years Centre (OEYC) invites young mothers (up to age 22 with a child or children up to age 6) to join its Young Moms Group. The group provides young mothers and their children with the opportunity to participate in various activities, play games, network and have fun. Meetings are held every Thursday from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the OEYC, located at 57 Mill Street North, Unit 105. Snacks and one bus ticket per person are provided.

Volunteers Needed

ESS Support Services needs volunteers to help in the Adult Day Services program that runs Monday to Saturday. If you are available once a week from approximately 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. become a volunteer who assists with meals, crafts, games and exercises. A more flexible schedule is also available as Volunteer Driver to help get seniors around.

African Canadian Mental Health Support

The Krasman Centre, a community mental health organization serving York Region and South Simcoe, runs a support group every second Thursday for African-Canadians who live with a diagnosed or undiagnosed mental health issue. No fees are required for any of the services provided. The Krasman Centre is located at 10121 Yonge Street, (one block north of Major Mackenzie Drive), Richmond Hill.

Volunteer Tutors Sought

The Adult Literacy Program at St. Christopher House is seeking volunteer tutors to help adults learn to read, write or perform basic math. Ideal candidates should enjoy working with people and live or work in downtown/west Toronto.

St. Christopher House, located at 248 Ossington Avenue (Dundas St. West), comprises a team of volunteers, participants and staff which develops programs in response to community needs and promotes socio-economic conditions in which individuals and families can thrive.

Free Women’s Workshops

The Multicultural Inter Agency Group of Peel is offering free workshops for women from the African and Caribbean communities. The workshops’ objectives are to maintain family relationships, provide safety and self-support tips, improve life skills and build capabilities.

Child care will be provided and light refreshments served. In addition, a draw on participant’s names will be held. Limited seating is available.
