Sir Clement was first Governor General

ST. KITTS/NEVIS, Basseterre: Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. Denzil Douglas, has expressed “sadness” at the passing Sunday of the Federation’s first Governor General, Sir Clement Arrindell, GCMG, GCVO, QC.,  at the age of 79.

Press Secretary to the Prime Minister, Erasmus Williams, said Prime Minister Douglas expressed his “deep sadness and sincere condolences” on hearing the news of Sir Clement’s death.

Sir Clement, who also served as the last Governor of St. Kitts and Nevis, post independence from 1980 to 1983 was sworn in as Governor General on September 18, 1983 upon independence and served until his retirement in 1996.

Before this, Sir Clement, a barrister, was a magistrate in St. Kitts and Nevis and the British Virgin Islands and a judge of the West Indies Associated States Supreme Court.
