She comes from a family lineage that has enjoyed remarkable physical constitution. Edna Agard’s father – Justice of the Peace, Archibald “Daddy” Thorne, passed away in his 100th year in Guyana in 1988 – and an American-based sister, Offee Rahat, turned 97 last August.
On Saturday, family and close friends gathered at a Scarborough restaurant to celebrate Agard’s 95th birthday.
Two of her 10 living kids – Irma Harris and Rawle Agard – reside in the Greater Toronto Area and they played a pivotal role in organizing the event. The remaining children, who live in Florida, Texas, New York and Atlanta, were also at the party.
Born in Vergenogen on the East Bank of the Essequibo River, Agard migrated to Canada in 1983. She has been a resident of Blair Court Seniors Home for the past 28 years.
“She still has most of her faculties together and she is active for her age,” said her daughter, Irma Harris. “It’s so good that we can all come together to help her mark this milestone.”
The majority of her 28 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren were also at the birthday party.
