Two Ryerson University students of Jamaican descent will participate in the Olympic torch relay this month as it makes its way across Canada for the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver.
Naomi Cowan is scheduled to carry the torch for 300 metres on Monday, December 21 in Port Colbourne, Ontario.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Cowan came to Toronto in 2006 to attend Ryerson and is a fourth year radio and television arts student. She is the university’s official representative in the relay and a former member of the Ryerson Board of Governors.
Vanessa Lewis, who is in her third year at the Ted Rogers School of Business Management, will carry the torch the same distance on Saturday, December 19 in Milton. Lewis is proud to participate in the relay and feels it is a way to give back to a country that has given her many opportunities. She will be joined by her entire family the day of the relay.
The Ryerson students are among 12,000 people taking part in the Olympic Torch Relay.
